Studies (now also composition with Erkki Melartin) at the Helsinki Music Institute from the autumn semester 1920 to the end of the spring semester 1921.
Sonata in C Minor for Violin and Piano (unfinished),  Sonata for Viola and Piano in B Flat Minor.

First movement of the Sonata for Viola and Piano performed at a Music Institute student concert on May 17.
On gaining majority age, sells the family home at Klamila.

Studies at the Helsinki Music Institute from the spring semester 1922 to the end of the spring semester 1924. Piano Quartet performed at a Music Institute student concert on May 24 and at a Music Institute concert at the Helsinki University Hall on November 14. Väinö Pesola, writing in the Suomen Sosialidemokraatti newspaper, calls Klami the most talented composition student at the Music Institute.

Piano Quintet performed at a Music Institute student concert on May 25.
Restaurant pianist at, among others, the Valtionhotelli in Imatra, where he meets Toini Nykänen.
[Toy Tragedy]

The Toy Tragedy suite for string quartet is performed at a concert of the Music Institute’s student union on March 30. In the spring is awarded a grant from the Rafael Ahlström Fund. In spring or early summer embarks on a study tour to Paris that will last about a year. Lives in the Latin quarter, goes to concerts, studies scores and possibly receives some instruction in composition.

Falls ill in January. Becomes familiar with the provocative “scandalous hit” of Parisian musical life. Returns to Helsinki in May 1925. Later says of his time in Paris: “The Russian Modernists, such as Prokofiev and Stravinsky, and the new Spanish music really shook me.” Develops a life-long admiration for Ravel.

Leaving certificate from the Helsinki Music Institute dated November 1, 1925.

In December, begins as a conscript in the Karelian Guards Regiment in Viipuri.

Composition prize of 3,000 marks from the Hjalmar Pesonen Fund.
Karelian Rhapsody

Habanera played at a concert by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Toivo Haapanen on January 22, the first orchestral work by Klami to be performed in public.

Highly-acclaimed, even sensational first concert of his compositions held at the Helsinki University Hall on September 27. Programme: Habanera, Une nuit à Montmartre, Three Chinese Songs and Karelian Rhapsody. Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leo Funtek, soloists Ernst Linko and Anna Hagelstam. Heikki Klemetti writes in Uusi Suomi: “All in all, one is relieved of all doubts when listening to Mr Klami; it is obvious that he knows what he is doing and is able to achieve his wishes. And that he has what it takes, to use a customary phrase.”

The Kordelin Foundation awards him a grant of 10,000 marks.

In the autumn, departs on a 6-month study trip to Vienna, where he possibly receives some instruction in composition from Hans Gál. Probably hears Bartók and Ravel performing some of their works; the latter’s repertoire includes the Bolero.

Grant of 10,000 marks from the Kordelin Foundation.
Returns to Finland in the spring and settles in Helsinki. Writes in Iltalehti: “Paris is the promised land of new music, Vienna of the old.”
Teaches the piano at the Folk Conservatory 1929–1932.
